The view from Plas Maenan Hotel at Dolgarrog in 1978 looks out across the Conwy Valley, with the River Conwy cutting through the middle distance and a broad patchwork of fields, hedgerows and scattered trees stretching to the wooded hills beyond. In the foreground is the hotel’s curved balustraded terrace and car park, where a white Citroën CX is joined by two red Fords, an Escort and a Fiesta, adding an extra layer of late-1970s period detail to the scene. The pale rock scar on the opposite hillside stands out clearly among the dense forestry, while sheep-dotted pasture, isolated farms and ribbons of riverside vegetation help to give the whole view the settled, pastoral character for which this part of the valley was long known.
