A closer platform view of Pitlochry railway station in 1981, with the station’s handsome stone buildings filling the left-hand side of the frame and the railway stretching away into the distance on the right. The black latticework of the footbridge cuts into the foreground, while a small group of suitcases and bags on the platform adds a quiet human detail to the otherwise empty scene.
The architecture is a big part of the picture here, from the stepped gables and round windows to the covered section of platform carried on simple columns. Pitlochry was one of the more distinctive stations on the Highland Main Line, and this view shows how much of its nineteenth-century character still survived into the early 1980s despite the more pared-back look of British Rail in that period.
