Pimlico Underground Station, London, in 1979, shortly after its opening, with the ticket hall still looking strikingly new in its late-1970s London Transport style. Rows of stainless-steel ticket machines dominate the foreground, their bright yellow fare panels advertising 15p, 20p, 25p, 30p and 40p singles, while black electronic signs above the barriers mark the entrances to the escalators below. Commuters and travellers in coats, flared trousers and checked shirts move through the hall or pause at the machines, capturing the station as both a modern addition to the network and an unmistakably period interior. Opened in 1972 as the newest station on the Victoria line, Pimlico was one of the last completely new deep-level Underground stations built in central London.
