Piccadilly, London, in 1979, with St James’s Street opening in the background and a busy flow of traffic passing the corner building signed for the Bradford & Bingley Building Society. The street is full of familiar late-1970s London vehicles, including a black taxi, a red Bedford CF van, a white Morris Marina van and a red double-decker bus on route 9 to Hammersmith Broadway. A cyclist with a basket threads through the traffic on the right, while scaffolding on the left hints at the constant rebuilding and maintenance work typical of central London at the time. The mix of commercial traffic, red buses and solid institutional frontages makes this a strong everyday view of Piccadilly at the end of the 1970s.
