This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures a bright daytime scene along Piccadilly in 1959, looking west from the edge of Piccadilly Circus. The right side of the image is dominated by the grand neoclassical facade of the Swan & Edgar department store, a famous West End landmark that stood at this corner until its closure in 1982 and replacement by Tower Records. Further down the street, the architectural details of the Piccadilly Hotel and other historic buildings are visible under a clear blue sky. The road is populated with mid-century city traffic, including several classic black saloon cars and a red double-decker bus in the distance. Pedestrians in period attire are seen on the pavements, and a traditional “No Entry” sign stands prominently in the left foreground. This archival print is a magnificent record of London’s retail history and serves as an excellent resource for editorial publishing, research, or to print for yourself as a unique piece of nostalgic décor.
