Piccadilly Circus and Regent Street, London, 1989. Looking north up Regent Street, this bright late-1980s view captures the great Portland stone curves of the circus with the old Swan & Edgar building on the left, by then trading as Tower Records, and the domed Westminster County Insurance Offices on the right. Below, the junction is busy with pedestrians, a red sightseeing bus, a Grey-Green coach and assorted cars, while Westminster’s bronze-painted railings and lamp standards remain in place around the pavements and crossings. It is a fine record of Piccadilly Circus at the end of the decade, when the famous junction still retained much of its older street furniture and traffic-cluttered character, even as some of its best-known buildings had taken on new identities.
