Piccadilly Circus, London, 1989. This lively late-1980s scene looks across the steps of the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, with people sitting around the base while others stream past the circus on a bright day. In the foreground, two figures in striking alternative fashions stand out against the crowd, including one with a vivid red mohawk and oversized purple top, giving the image a strong end-of-decade feel. Beyond them can be seen the grand frontage of the Criterion Theatre, while to the right the rebuilding and commercial reshaping of the circus is hinted at by scaffolding, hoardings and a sign for Wimpey. The mixture of tourists, local characters, eating, chatting and passing through the square makes this a vivid everyday view of Piccadilly Circus at the close of the 1980s.
