Piccadilly Circus, London, in 1987, with the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and the figure of Anteros standing in front of the grand Piccadilly frontage of Lillywhites. Around the base of the monument is a large temporary display for the London Evening Standard, headed “LONDON LIFE IN THE STANDARD”, with illustrated scenes including the Houses of Parliament and Little Venice, while pedestrians gather on the steps below. The photograph captures the Circus in a quieter moment than many later views, with Lillywhites branding prominent across the building and shopfronts behind. The orange hoarding at the rear appears to advertise a London attraction or show, adding another layer of late-1980s West End commercial detail to this well-known central London landmark.
