Piccadilly Circus at night, London, 1985. This close-up view of the rebuilt advertising corner focuses on the giant illuminated panels for Panasonic Colour TV, Coca-Cola and BASF, with the long green Carlsberg lager slogan “Probably the best in the world” running across the base. Below the signs, part of the glowing Wimpy frontage can still be seen at street level (it became Burger King in 1989) while the tight cropping and black sky emphasise the sheer scale and brightness of the hoardings themselves. It is a very characteristic mid-1980s Piccadilly Circus detail, when the junction’s visual identity was dominated by big international brands and electronic sign displays rather than the older jumble of theatre and cigarette advertising.
