Routemaster bus, Piccadilly Circus, London, 1979. This close street-level view captures a red London Transport Routemaster passing through Piccadilly Circus with a large Miss Selfridge advert along its upper side, while passengers can be seen through the windows and a woman in a pale blue coat waits by the roadside railings. In the background are signs for Piccadilly Circus Station and J. Travel Enquiries, but one of the most distinctive details is the gold-painted street furniture. The railings and traffic lights are finished in the same bronze-gold colour once used widely across the West End, including Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, Oxford Street and Marble Arch, part of a push to give these central shopping and tourist areas a smarter, more upmarket look. The result is a very recognisable late-1970s London scene, with the Routemaster, Underground signs and West End street furniture all working together to fix the image firmly in its period.
