Piccadilly Circus, London, 1979. This street-level view captures the famous advertising corner at Piccadilly Circus after its late-1970s rebuilding, with the giant illuminated hoardings for Canon, Coca-Cola and Fuji dominating the junction. To the left, the neon frontage of the Piccadilly Theatre can be seen with lines advertising Brian Clark’s play Can You Hear Me at the Back?, while below are signs for the Criterion Chinese Restaurant and a Westminster Bank branch. Crowds gather around the Underground entrance beneath the signs, a red London Transport bus appears in the background, and a direction sign on the right points towards Oxford Circus, Cambridge Circus and Leicester Square. The pedestrians in wide-lapelled suits, the motorcycle at the kerb, and the mixture of theatre advertising, global brands and busy street furniture give the whole scene a very characteristic late-1970s West End atmosphere.
