Piccadilly Circus at night, London, 1977. This dark and atmospheric view captures the circus after dusk, with a cluster of illuminated shopfronts and theatre signs standing out against the blacked-out street. Among the businesses and signs visible are Boots Chemist, Lillywhites, and the Criterion Theatre advertising Leslie Phillips in Sextet. The glowing street lamps, traffic lights and passing silhouettes give the scene a distinctly gritty late-1970s West End feel. The Boots Chemist seen here was open 24 hours and, according to police at the time, around midnight long lines would form with addicts collecting their dated prescriptions, with disturbances sometimes serious enough for officers to be called. When the new Boots opened across the street around 1980, the 24-hour opening was abandoned.
