Piccadilly Circus, London, 1975. This busy mid-1970s view captures the circus with the huge Coca-Cola sign dominating the advertising corner, while below it can be seen panels for Mopar, Bulova Accutron and cinema posters including The Godfather Part II. To the left, the Piccadilly Theatre neon is advertising Jimmy Jewel and Alfred Marks in Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys, with the Cathay Chinese Restaurant beneath. The most striking absence, though, is the blank frontage to the right of the hoardings, still marked “To Let” where the famous Guinness Clock had stood before its removal in 1971. With black cabs, a pale blue Volkswagen Beetle, a red double-decker bus, bronze-painted street furniture and the usual swirl of West End traffic, it is a fine Piccadilly Circus scene from the years when one of its best-known landmarks had temporarily disappeared.
