Piccadilly Circus and Eros, London, 1975. This close-up view centres on the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, with the winged figure popularly known as Eros rising above crowds spread across the steps on a bright summer day. The people gathered around the monument, many in flared trousers, open-necked shirts and other unmistakably mid-1970s fashions, are as much a part of the scene as the fountain itself. Behind, the frontage of the London Pavilion is advertising The Klansman, starring Lee Marvin and Richard Burton, while other billboard fragments and West End shopfronts help place the photograph firmly in the commercial heart of Piccadilly Circus. The busy railings, tall lamp standard and packed steps give the whole image the lively, slightly chaotic character that defined the circus in the 1970s.
