Piccadilly Circus, London, 1975. This busy mid-1970s view shows Piccadilly Circus with the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain on the left, topped by the winged figure popularly known as Eros, while people sit on the steps and gather behind the railings around the traffic island. Beyond it rises the frontage of the London Pavilion, carrying a huge billboard for The Man from Hong Kong, with scaffolding visible beside the building. On the right, a red London Transport double-decker bus passes an Embassy cigarette sign and a Marlboro Country advertising panel. The bus itself carries a yellow advert reading “Everyone needs the Gospel”, with smaller text below for the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Elephant & Castle. The ornate lamp standards, central railings, crowded pavements and mix of cinema, cigarette and religious advertising give the whole scene a very distinctive Piccadilly Circus character in 1975.
