Piccadilly Circus, London, 1974. This busy street-level view looks across Piccadilly Circus towards the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, with the figure popularly known as Eros rising in front of the grand façades of the advertising corner. The buildings beyond carry a good spread of visible names and signs, including Lillywhites, Embassy, the Cockney Pride Tavern and Boots Dispensing Chemists, while an orange House Martin van marked “Quality Games & Toys” passes through the junction. The crowd waiting at the crossing, the dark saloons and black cab, and the distinctive gold-painted traffic lights and street furniture all help fix the scene firmly in the mid-1970s, before the later rebuilding of the famous illuminated advertising site on the right.
