Piccadilly Circus, London, 1974. This view looks across the junction towards the great curved frontage of the Westminster County Insurance Offices, its dome, statuary and long run of Portland stone dominating the west side of the circus. Across the building can be read Sun Alliance London Insurance Group and Alliance Life Office, while on the right the rebuilt advertising corner is filled with bright commercial panels for Cinzano and Gold International Lager. At street level are more period names including Smirnoff, Samuel, Saqui & Lawrence and Green & Symons, with Westminster’s distinctive bronze-painted lamp standards and traffic lights standing in the foreground. A pale saloon, a darker car rounding the circus and small groups of pedestrians complete a smart central London scene from the middle of the 1970s.
