Piccadilly Circus and Eros, London, 1972. This busy early-1970s view looks across the circus towards the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, with the figure popularly known as Eros rising above Westminster’s bronze-painted railings and lamp standards. On the left, the great advertising corner is crowded with familiar signs for Max Factor For Charm, Gordon’s Gin, Commercial Union Assurance, Refreshing and Wrigley’s Doublemint, while the London Pavilion is showing A Fistful of Dynamite. At street level can be picked out The Eros Jewellers, Tiffany’s Dancing, Australia travel advertising, posters and souvenir shops, the Embassy cigarette sign, and the roundel of Piccadilly Circus Station. The combination of giant hoardings, crowded pavements and dark, traffic-stained architecture gives the scene the unmistakable character of Piccadilly Circus before its later clean-up and rebuilding.
