Piccadilly Circus and Eros, London, 1972. This fine early-1970s view looks across the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, with the figure popularly known as Eros standing in front of one of the most crowded advertising corners in London. The great illuminated hoardings behind are packed with familiar names including Max Factor For Charm, Mon Chéri, Gordon’s Gin, Commercial Union Assurance, Refreshing, and Wrigley’s Doublemint Chewing Gum, while the London Pavilion is showing Sean Connery as James Bond 007 in Diamonds Are Forever. On the left edge can also be seen part of the curved Cinzano The Bianco sign and a Lloyds Bank panel, with the Woolmark display beyond the Pavilion. At street level are more period details including The Eros Jewellers, Dancing Café de Paris, the Cartoon Cinema, posters, gifts and T-shirts shops, and the black railings and globe-topped lamp standards that gave the circus its familiar look at the time.
