Piccadilly Circus, London, 1971. This close view of the famous advertising corner shows the huge curved signs for Cinzano The Bianco, Skol International Lager and Volkswagen, with the giant Coca-Cola panel still dominating the left-hand side. Below are more familiar period names including Rotary Fine Watches, H. Samuel, Green & Symons, Cartoon Cinema and the All Cartoon Holiday Show, while a Lloyds Bank advert fills the lower right-hand panel. Most telling of all is the narrow white section between the Coca-Cola and Cinzano hoardings, marked “Advertising Space To Let”. This was the year the famous Guinness clock was removed, and its absence is clearly visible here, leaving an unusually blank gap among the normally crowded signs of Piccadilly Circus.
