Piccadilly Circus and Eros, London, 1970. This crowded view of the circus captures the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, with the winged figure popularly known as Eros, surrounded by traffic, pedestrians and a dense patchwork of West End advertising. On the left, the great curved hoardings carry giant signs for Max Factor, Mon Chéri, Gordon’s Gin, Commercial Union Assurance and Wrigley’s Spearmint, while beyond the fountain can be seen the London Pavilion with a large billboard for Judy Geeson, Martin Potter and Melvyn Hayes in The Games. Further down the street are more familiar names including Grant’s Scotch Whisky, Esso and the Cockney Pride Tavern. Black cabs, period saloons and crowds around the railings give the whole scene the busy, visually cluttered character that defined Piccadilly Circus at the start of the 1970s.
