This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures a candid moment of street life at Piccadilly Circus in 1968. In the centre of the frame, a Metropolitan Police officer in a traditional tunic and custodian helmet leans casually against the metal safety railings, observing the busy junction. Surrounding him are pedestrians in era-defining fashion, including a woman in a vibrant sleeveless purple dress and another in a bright blue textured dress. In the blurred background, the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and statue of Eros are visible, flanked by the “Daily Express” and “Woolmark” advertisements on the surrounding buildings. To the left, the “Cinzano” and “Skol International Lager” neon signs provide a colourful backdrop to the group. Cinzano was new this year and would remain a fixture for the next 10 years. A pale blue vintage car passes through the frame, adding to the mid-century atmosphere of this iconic London location.
