This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the ever-changing face of London’s West End in 1968. The Monico building is the focal point, prominently displaying a large “Lloyds Bank” neon billboard featuring an animated cheque and the bank’s black horse logo. Above this, a massive advertisement for “Gold Leaf” cigarettes declares them “One of the great cigarettes.” The iconic “Skol International Lager” sign remains a fixture on the left, alongside the “H. Samuel” jewellers storefront. The gap used to hold the BP sign from 1961 to 1966 – it was replaced by Cinzano later in 1968. A red London double-decker bus and several black taxis are seen behind metal safety railings, while a white vintage car navigates the wet street in the foreground. At street level, the “Cartoon Cinema” and “Paperbacks & Magazines” shop are active, illustrating the commercial diversity of the era. This digital download is a marvellous record of mid-century urban design, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of vintage British wall art.
