Old colour photo of Piccadilly Circus in 1966. The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, featuring the figure of Eros, serves as a central meeting point where numerous people are seen resting on the stone steps. In the background, the iconic advertising facade is visible, featuring a large “Bulova Accutron” clock and a bright pink billboard for the film “One of Our Spies Is Missing” starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. Classic neon signs for “Coca-Cola,” “Guinness Time,” and “Double Diamond” beer dominate the skyline, alongside ads for “Lemon Hart Rum” and “BOAC VC10” jets. The Monico building shows signs of transition, with several windows appearing empty or boarded up, and the advert for BP (which arrived in 1961) has been taken down. It was replaced by Cinzano in 1968. This digital download is a wonderful record of London during the historic month of the 1966 World Cup, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of vintage British wall art.
