This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the iconic commercial landscape of Piccadilly Circus in 1966. The image features the famous Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain with the figure of Eros, set against a backdrop of legendary neon advertisements including “Coca-Cola,” “Guinness Time,” and “Skol International Lager.” A prominent yellow vertical sign for the “Bulova Accutron” electronic timepiece stands to the left, while billboards for “One of Our Spies Is Missing” and “BOAC VC10” jets reflect the mid-sixties era. Note the missing BP sign which had been here since 1961 – it wouldn’t be replaced until 1968 when Cinzano signed a 10 year lease. In the foreground, pedestrians in period attire, including a man in a trilby hat and glasses, cross the street near a light-coloured Vauxhall PB and a black taxi. To the far left, the Piccadilly Theatre bills the play “Amedee” featuring a cast including Joss Ackland.
