This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the early morning energy of Piccadilly Circus in 1966. Taken from the steps of the Eros fountain, the image features a red London double-decker bus in motion, its form slightly blurred against the backdrop of the famous advertising hoardings. The sky-high displays include the massive “Double Diamond” beer sign, the “Coca-Cola” roundel, and the “Guinness Time” clock. To the left, a large vertical advertisement for “Ever Ready Batteries for life!” is visible, while the “Schweppes” sign glows in blue on the right. At the base of the buildings, the red “Air India” signage and the shopfront for “Saqui & Lawrence” jewellers (who later became H Samuel) are partially obscured by the passing bus. The quiet, damp pavements and empty steps suggest the city is just waking up, providing a unique perspective on this usually crowded landmark. This digital download is a marvellous record of mid-century London, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of vintage urban wall art.
