This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures a transitionary moment at Piccadilly Circus in 1956. Unusually, the famous neon advertisements for Bovril and Schweppes that traditionally dominated the Monico building on the left have been removed, with the structure instead encased in extensive scaffolding for renovation or maintenance work. The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and statue of Eros remain the central landmark, while the London Pavilion to the right prominently features a large film billboard for the 1956 war drama “The Bold and the Brave.” Other iconic commercial signs remain visible in the background, including those for Wrigley’s Chewing Gum and Gordon’s Gin. The street scene is populated by a mix of mid-century vehicles, including a blue car and a classic black taxi, alongside pedestrians in period attire. This archival record is an excellent resource for historical research or to print for yourself as a unique piece of vintage London décor.
