This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures a bustling daytime scene at Piccadilly Circus, the vibrant heart of London’s West End. The focal point is the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, topped by the statue of Anteros (Eros), where pedestrians are seen resting on the steps. The background is dominated by iconic mid-century advertising hoardings, including massive signs for Bovril, Schweppes Tonic Water, and the “Guinness Time” clock on the left. On the right, the facade features prominent advertisements for Gordon’s Gin, Wrigley’s Chewing Gum, and Votrix Vermouth. At street level, the ground floor of Piccadilly Mansions shows the storefront of Saqui & Lawrence jewellers, which later became H Samuel. The scene is filled with period transport, including traditional red double-decker buses, a black vintage car, and a delivery truck for “Napoleon” products.
