The surrounding shopfronts and signs add a wealth of period detail, including Derek’s Record, Cassette & Cartridge Centre, Gold Centre Jewellers, Permutt Fashions, Ravel and Vita Shu, while the striped frontage of Yankee on the right adds an especially vivid splash of colour. Union flags and bold awnings reinforce the slightly theatrical feel of the market, where fashion, records, fast food and small independent traders all jostled together in one of the East End’s busiest shopping scenes. It is a wonderfully rich late-1970s view of Petticoat Lane before later redevelopment changed much of the surrounding streetscape.
