The surrounding shopfronts include Swiss-Japan Imports Ltd and a Williams betting office, while farther along the street a dramatic placard reading “THE END IS AT HAND” rises above the crowd, adding a wonderfully eccentric East End detail to the scene. Canvas stall roofs, timber frames and piled boxes reinforce the improvised character of the market, where trade spilled across every available inch of space. It is a vivid elevated view of Petticoat Lane at its most crowded and theatrical, before later redevelopment changed much of the surrounding streetscape.
