Petticoat Lane Market, London, in 1970, packed shoulder to shoulder with shoppers moving between tightly pressed stalls and shopfronts in a part of the East End that has since been almost entirely rebuilt. The scene is hemmed in by a mixture of older commercial buildings and newer post-war blocks, with signs for clothing manufacturers and market traders visible above the crowd, while handbags and garments hang from the stall frames on either side. Rising above the heads is a striking evangelical placard proclaiming “FLEE FROM THE WRATH TO COME”, an arresting detail that adds to the noise, congestion and theatre long associated with Petticoat Lane. The large building on the left was demolished in 2017 and replaced by a Travelodge Hotel
