This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the eclectic fashion of the late sixties outside United Standard House at 6 Middlesex Street in 1969. The scene vividly illustrates the “Swinging London” influence reaching the East End, featuring a person in a striking floral silk kimono and another in bold red velvet flared trousers paired with a large floppy hat. In contrast, other pedestrians, including a young boy in a mustard-yellow bomber jacket and a man in a conservative brown blazer, represent the more traditional styles of the era. The glass entrance to the building, which was the headquarters for various textile and commercial firms, displays the address “6” and the name “United Standard House” on the door. This section of Middlesex Street near the Aldgate roundabout has since been demolished and redeveloped, making this digital download a significant visual record of a vanished urban environment. It is an ideal piece to print for yourself as a work of nostalgic 1960s street photography.
