This 1989 photograph captures a wonderfully chaotic noticeboard window in Notting Hill, packed with handwritten personal ads, room-to-let cards, job offers and more dubious propositions. Among the notices are appeals for lodgers, bedsits and double rooms, alongside requests to meet gentlemen, offers of massage, typing work and other small services, all squeezed together in a dense patchwork of marker pen and biro. The effect is a vivid reminder of pre-internet London, when local windows and shopfront boards still acted as informal community exchanges for housing, work, companionship and odd jobs. It is an especially good social-history image because the details are so ordinary and unfiltered, preserving the texture of everyday life in late-1980s Notting Hill far better than any official streetscape view could.
