This 1989 close-up of a Notting Hill noticeboard window captures the strange, funny and faintly seedy world of pre-internet personal advertising in London. Handwritten cards offer rooms to let in places such as Cricklewood, Kingsbury Road and just off Cricklewood Broadway, while others advertise hi-fi equipment for sale, massage services and more suggestive personal notices. The mix of neat block capitals, hurried biro writing and brightly coloured cards gives the whole display an improvised, highly local feel, preserving the sort of everyday street-level communication that has almost entirely disappeared. It is a wonderfully unfiltered social-history image, showing how Londoners once searched for lodgings, sold possessions, offered services and sought companionship through nothing more than index cards pinned in a shop window.
