Paxton & Whitfield Ltd, Jermyn Street, London, in 1979, with the famous cheesemonger’s richly stocked window display spilling with wheels, boxes and jars beneath a row of hanging hams. The fascia carries the Paxton & Whitfield name in large gold lettering, while the window is filled with cheeses including stacked tubs marked Blue Stilton Cheese, reinforcing the shop’s long-standing reputation as one of London’s best-known specialist food retailers. Through the doorway and glass can be seen shelves of packaged goods and the warmly lit interior beyond, giving the whole frontage an inviting, old-fashioned quality. It is a fine late-1970s record of a classic St James’s shopfront, where traditional specialist food retail still held its ground amid the changing West End.
