This 1984 view of Parliament Square captures Westminster at its busiest, with traffic circling the square beneath trees and the clock tower of Big Ben partly wrapped in scaffolding in the background. Prominent in the foreground is a black London taxi, while beside it sit a red Volkswagen Golf and other period cars threading through the junction. On the left is Routemaster WLT 877 working route 76 to Stamford Hill, while a blue Cityrama sightseeing bus and other red buses underline the mix of ordinary London travel and tourist traffic around the Palace of Westminster. It is a strong documentary image of Parliament Square before later changes to traffic management and security, when this part of Westminster still felt more like a busy urban road junction than the more controlled setting it became later.
