This authentic 1960s color photograph captures the distinctive modernist architecture of the Downtown Garage at the northwest corner of Washington Boulevard and West Larned Street in Detroit, Michigan, in 1967. The structure features a unique facade of textured gold panels set within a white concrete grid, exemplifying mid-century functional design. In the background, the massive smokestacks of a local utility plant rise above a red brick building, while the street level is active with period-accurate vehicles, including a red Ford Mustang and a North American Van Lines moving truck. This specific section of Larned Street and the garage itself were later eliminated during the 1980s expansion of the Cobo Center. This high-resolution scan provides a detailed look at the lost urban fabric of the city’s convention district during the late sixties. This digital download is an incredible piece of local history, perfect to print for yourself as vintage Michigan wall art.
