A 1960s color photo of a Pan Am (Pan American World Airways) Douglas DC-6B, registration N6105C, on the apron at Miami International Airport in 1963. The aircraft features a polished aluminum lower fuselage with the classic blue cheatline and “PAN AM” titles. In the background, the airport’s multi-story terminal and control tower are visible, featuring a vertical “WELCOME” sign and orange “MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT” lettering along the rooftop observation deck. Ground crew are active around the plane, with Pan Am-branded baggage carts and a small tug positioned near the cargo hold, capturing the busy operational heart of this major gateway to Latin America during the early 1960s.
Today, Miami International Airport (MIA) has evolved into one of the busiest cargo and passenger hubs in the world, with the original mid-century terminal buildings largely replaced or encased by massive modern concourses. The Douglas DC-6B, a premier piston-engine airliner of its day, was eventually phased out as the jet age took full hold with the arrival of the Boeing 707 and 727. The specific aircraft pictured, N6105C, served Pan Am’s regional and medium-haul routes before the airline’s eventual dissolution in 1991. The open-air observation deck seen in the background has long been closed due to modern security regulations.
