Palmer, Alaska, 1973 — A classic roadside slice of small-town America, set against the dramatic Chugach Mountains. The wide, open highway leads past vintage neon signs advertising DISCOUNT LIQUOR, a drive-in, and a roadside motel — the kind of businesses that once defined travel through Alaska before big-box chains and bypass roads changed everything. Cars from the late 1960s and early ’70s roll past, their chrome gleaming under the bright summer sky, while power lines stretch along the roadside, guiding the eye toward the rugged peaks beyond. Palmer, founded as a New Deal agricultural colony in the 1930s, still carried much of its frontier spirit in the early ’70s — part farming hub, part highway stopover, and part gateway to the Alaskan wilderness. This scene captures that moment perfectly, when the town still felt remote, the roads were wide open, and the mountains were never far away.
