Paddington station in 1976, looking across the broad platforms beneath Brunel’s great arched trainshed with its forest of iron ribs, hanging lamps and prominent platform number boards. A set of blue and grey British Rail coaches stands at the platforms under the large station clock, while the almost empty concourse and scattered passengers give the scene a quiet, spacious feel unusual for one of London’s great termini. Details such as the luggage trolley, buffet signage, fluorescent-lit indicator boards and the long perspective towards platforms 6 and 7 root the image firmly in the everyday atmosphere of British Rail in the 1970s. It is a fine wide interior view of Paddington before later refurbishment, capturing both the grandeur of the Victorian roof and the more subdued look of the station in the late BR era.
