This view looks east along Oxford Street in 1979, capturing a stretch packed with familiar West End names of the era. On the left is the prominent red neon circle of Richard Shops, which by this date occupied 374 Oxford Street — a site with a notable history. Until 1977 this had been Swears & Wells, once reputedly the largest furriers in the world. After Swears & Wells closed, Richard Shops took over, before the unit later became The Body Shop and eventually Pandora. Also on the left is Lilley & Skinner, the famous shoe store, and further along the block stands Debenhams, then still one of the biggest department stores on the street. On the right, the grey 1960s frontage of Lloyds Bank and Garners Steak House We can also see Everon. A Route 7 Routemaster turns into view, while scaffolding mid-frame shows another Oxford Street building undergoing renovation — a reminder that even in 1979 this famous shopping street was constantly being reshaped.
