Oxford Street, London, in 1975, looking west along a broad stretch of the West End dominated by post-war retail blocks, heavy traffic and the familiar red-and-blue signs of C&A. The modern C&A canopy projects over the pavement on the right, reflected in the glass frontage beside passing shoppers in coats and flared trousers, while farther across the road more double-decker buses, black taxis and small saloons move through the one-way traffic. On the left, part of the Littlewoods frontage can be seen beneath a dark curved corner block, adding another well-known high-street name to the scene. The whole view captures Oxford Street before later rebuilding and landscaping softened its harsher post-war appearance, when this part of the street still felt overwhelmingly commercial, traffic-heavy and unmistakably 1970s.
