Oxford Street, London, in 1972, at the junction with Duke Street, with traffic wardens controlling the crossing while an unusual visitor passes through the West End traffic. The green-and-cream double-decker is a Bristol Lodekka, a type far more commonly associated with provincial bus fleets than central London, where Routemasters normally dominated; its livery suggests it was very likely an Eastern National vehicle, probably on private hire or excursion work. Behind it stands the corner branch of National Westminster Bank at 413 Oxford Street, its newly branded frontage marking the early years of the NatWest name after the bank’s formation in 1968. The mix of the rare Lodekka, the bank corner, the street signs for Oxford Street and Duke Street, and the controlled crossing makes this a particularly rich snapshot of Oxford Street in transition during the early 1970s.
