Oxford Street, London, in 1972, at the junction with John Princes Street, with shoppers and traffic passing one of the West End’s broadest and busiest stretches. Across the road can be seen the London headquarters of Pontins Holiday Camps at Number 242-244, its signage running above the shopfronts beside other familiar names including Bally and Samuel. A black London taxi moves through the scene behind the railings, while pedestrians wait at the crossing in a mix of early-1970s coats, tailoring and street fashions. The worn stone cladding and long office block above the shops give the whole corner a distinctly post-war Oxford Street character, capturing a time when holiday camp companies, shoe shops and fashion stores all jostled for space along the capital’s premier shopping street.
