Oxford Street, London, in 1972, looking east with the grand frontage of Selfridges filling the left-hand side and crowds spilling off the pavements into the crossing. In the centre a red Routemaster on route 8 heads for Old Ford, surrounded by the heavy traffic and dense footfall that already made Oxford Street one of London’s most congested shopping streets. Across the road stands the former Butlin’s holiday camp headquarters, where Sir Billy Butlin’s offices and travel agency were based, its red signage still prominent above the building. Just beside it is Milletts, the familiar camping and outdoor equipment chain, another recognisable high-street name of the period. Together the buses, shoppers, department store architecture and holiday-company signage make this a vivid record of Oxford Street at full early-1970s intensity.
