Oxford Circus, London, in 1972, looking east along Oxford Street with Spirella House dominating the right-hand corner. Its upper windows still carry the Spirella name, while at street level the building is occupied by Wedgwood at Oxford Circus and The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Assn, with bold black-and-white window displays facing the junction. Across the road on the left are more familiar West End names including Peter Robinson, C&A and Hepworths, while the signs for Oxford Circus Station, the Underground roundel and the vertical Studies in Home sign add extra period detail. Traffic streams through the crossroads beneath the one-way system, including a black London taxi, a motorcyclist and a mix of early-1970s saloons, making this a strong everyday record of one of London’s busiest shopping junctions.
