Oxford Street, London, in 1970, looking east in bright afternoon light with the pavements crowded by shoppers and office workers at the height of the West End’s post-war retail bustle. On the right are period shopfronts and signs including Penberthys, St Paul’s Employment Agency, Jackson the Tailor and a glowing Steak Bar sign, while a red pillar box stands near the kerb among the crowds. Farther along the street the vertical C&A sign can be seen on the left-hand side, and the broad carriageway still feels comparatively open following the introduction of Oxford Street’s one-way system. The stream of pedestrians, smartly dressed men, bold late-1960s fashions and busy commercial frontages make this an especially vivid snapshot of everyday central London at the start of the 1970s.
