Westminster Bridge Road in London in 1956, looking towards Westminster Bridge with the bomb-damaged old St Thomas’s Hospital buildings on the left and the Palace of Westminster beyond. The Elizabeth Tower, widely known as Big Ben, is covered in scaffolding, while black taxis, vans, pedestrians, traffic lights and road signs add everyday post-war street detail to the scene. St Thomas’s Hospital had occupied its Lambeth riverside site since 1871, but parts of the complex were badly damaged during the Second World War and the northern end of the site was later redeveloped. This colour photograph captures a transitional view of central London, with Victorian hospital architecture, wartime damage, 1950s traffic and the familiar Westminster skyline all visible in one frame.
