Staines station in 1982, with the platform sign, iron fencing and bench in the foreground and a stark boarded-up brick utility building standing just beyond the platform edge. The scene is full of small British Rail details, from the simple lamp standards and rough platform surface to the overgrown edges, black-painted railings and the contrast between the older brick structure and the more modern buildings behind it. The large windowless building is believed to have been a telephone exchange or similar communications building, which would fit its solid, functional design and lack of ordinary station-style windows. By the early 1980s it already looked disused or at least little used, giving this corner of Staines a slightly forgotten, back-of-station feel.
