This 1984 view looks across Old Palace Yard and Abingdon Street towards the richly detailed riverfront façade of the Palace of Westminster, with the great south front and its vast traceried window dominating the scene. The Gothic stonework is softened by the bright spring light, while scaffolding can be seen rising around one of the towers behind, a reminder that the Palace was already in constant need of repair long before the present-day restoration debates. In the foreground, everyday London traffic circulates through the open space, including a Sycamore Launderers Dry Cleaners Ford Transit van, a silver Datsun Sunny and other period cars, giving the image a very workaday feel despite its grand setting. It is a strong record of this part of Westminster before later security changes and streetscape alterations, when traffic still moved more freely around the Palace and Old Palace Yard retained more of its older open-road character.
